History Roundup

The Peace Corps was created on March 1, 1961 by Executive Order 10924. John F. Kennedy got his idea for the Peace Corps from an organization called Operation Crossroads Africa. He first articulated this idea in a campaign speech at University of Michigan. The positive response from the students was overwhelming and encouraged him to follow through on his plan of establishing the Peace Corps.
The Peace Corps was founded to reach out to countries in need and spread democracy. Listen to the podcast to find out more about how the Peace Corps affected both the volunteers and the host countries and how it's foundation was tied to events happening at the time. You will also learn about opposition to the Peace Corps and what it does today.

  1. Hey Tess and Delaney!

So I really enjoyed learning more about the Peace Corps through your podcast. It was very informative, and I learned many things that I hadn't known before, for instance, that at one time the Peace Corps was a government-funded agency. I think the personal testimonials from people in the Peace Corps added to your podcast and made me want to hear more from others that had helped bring peace and prosperity to other countries. Overall, I really enjoyed the podcast and I appreciate you keeping the presentation enjoyable by using speech excerpts and songs while also informing me about some of the more vital aspects of the Peace Corps. Great Job!

  2. Hey y'all!
I really enjoyed your podcast on the peace corps. I loved hearing about how the Peace Corps and why you guys decided to do your project on this topic. I especially liked the part when you talk about the experiences that Peace Corps. I really liked how you got to see how the peace corps is for people who participate in it.
I also really liked how you showed different views on the Peace Corps and didn't just show one biased view on it. Great job on your podcast!

  3. Hey guys!

So, I loved your podcast. The Peace Corps is something I have been interested in for a long time, and I really enjoyed learning about its inception and development through our nation’s history. I thought it was great that you picked something you were personally interested in, and I thought that interest was evident in the way you presented your podcast. My favorite part was the testimonial of the African-American that volunteered with the Mayans...hearing about the experience from an actual volunteer really gave a good view of what the Peace Corps is all about. All of the primary sources, such as the testimonials, readings, and sound clips really helped shape your podcast. However, though I enjoyed them, I think the podcast could have been improved if you had spaced them out more. I felt most of the primary sources came very quickly in the beginning, while you spent most of the time actually discussing the material in the later half. If they were spaced out throughout the podcast, I believe it could have been even better. Overall, I really liked it! Thank you!

  4. Hey guys!

I really enjoyed your podcast! You did a great job introducing the primary sources in the beginning of the podcast, giving excellent context for each one, and not deviating from the main focus of each point presented. I enjoyed the enthusiasm you both seem to have for the peace core, as it made the podcast more interesting to listen to. Also, every tidbit and fact presented had great context and was used well enough that I could follow the timeline for the peace core with knowing much about the period myself.
I also really enjoyed the second part of the podcast, where you introduced a very real connection by utilizing the letters written by the African American peace core volunteers, as it introduced an aspect of diversity to the topic which I appreciated.
I liked the song as well! It seems really pretentious now, but I feel like in context, it must have been a threat to the Peace Core's existence and its counter-argument to the hippie generation. This part of the podcast was especially enjoyable to me as I like to see that the Peace Core survived a test of opposition.
I think the only thing that needs to be improved upon is the introduction of more media from the time, as it gives excellent context and a good view into the minds of the volunteers and reactions to the Peace Core. I feel like the ending came abruptly and a transition to modern times could have made a better impact.

    Thank you,

  5. Hey you two,

I thought your podcast was really informative and interesting. Before this I would not have had a clue how or why the Peace Corps was started. I thought you had some great information to share, and I liked they way you incorporated the music and speeches to support what you were saying.
The only thing I'd tell you to try differently is to not just read off the facts. Possible try a back and forth conversation or something to provide a bit more life to the podcast.

    Thanks,
    Darrow Goff
